Workshop Sessions
The workshop will have two keynotes, two plenary sessions, four panel discussions, a roundtable, and breakout sessions. We will also have a book launch, a documentary premiere screening, and an exhibit launch.
Keynote Address 1
Topic: Climate Change, Sustainability, and Southeast Asia’s Environmental Future
Speaker: Kathleen Johnson, University of California, Irvine
The keynote will set the stage for addressing the impact of climate change on Southeast Asia’s ecosystems, livelihoods, and communities, with a focus on building integrative research strategies.
Keynote Address 2
Topic: Mainstreaming Indigenous Knowledges for Climate Science and Policies
Speaker: Da-wei Kuan, National Chengchi University
This keynote will focus on how Indigenous knowledge provides valuable frameworks for climate resilience and adaptation into policy. The speaker will discuss how Indigenous practices, honed over centuries of environmental stewardship, can inform contemporary efforts on policies to address the challenges posed by climate change.
Plenary Session 1
Topic: Transdisciplinary Research in Southeast Asia: Bridging Climate Science, Archaeology, and Indigenous Knowledge
This plenary will bring together experts from climate science, archaeology, Indigenous knowledge holders, and environmental history to discuss the importance of integrative research approaches in addressing climate change and resilience in the region.

Topic: Conversation on Co-Stewardship of Indigenous Landscape and Resources in Taiwan
The contentious relationship between Indigenous land use and government conservation efforts can lead to conflicts between local communities and authorities. This panel examines the Co-stewardship model in Miaoli County, Taiwan, where the Saisiyat Indigenous Communities and the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency collaborate. By blending indigenous knowledge with modern science, they co-manage the land to achieve both environmental and economic sustainability.
